Dongfang 东方

Dongfang City is in the west of  Hainan Island, just across the Gulf of Tonkin from Vietnam. It is also in the center of the Asia-Pacific economic circle. It has an area of 2256 sq. km, and a population of 430,000 (80,000 of which are of Li and Miao ethnicity). Dongfang has an excellent loaction, by both the sea and mountains, with a white sand coastline of 84.4km., as well as 7 ports and 8 bays.  Dongfang is a great tropical travel destination. The 8 bays including Jiulong Bay and Sibi Bay are perfect for swimming and water sports. The climate is warm all year round, with an average annual temperature of 24—25° C (75.2-77° F). Dongfang has not only sun, sand, and surf, it also has mountains, forests, lakes, islands, karst outcroppings, and Li and Miao ethnic culture.

Attractions: 

Dongfang Railway Museum: As well as the railway exhibits there will soon be an exhibition of photographs from the second world Japanese occupation. The exhibition displays photos depicting a rescue mission on August 27th, 1945, by which Australian and Dutch prisoners and 90 Chinese escaped from the Japanese army’s control under the help of nine airborne members of Allied forces in Dongfang City.

Dongfang Gull Force War Memorial: The Gull Force, 266 Australian soldiers, fell into the hands of the Japanese while defending Ambon, Indonesia, and were relocated to a POW camp to work as slave labour, near Dongfang, on Hainan Island from 1942 to 1945.
