Hainan Tropical Fruit

Every month the official tourism website of Hainan, Visit Hainan, puts out a new Hainan Top Ten List! This month – the top ten tropical fruits to try when you visit Hainan! Hainan produces tons of fresh fruit and vegetables, and much of it is available all year round due to the tropical climate and sunny skies. There's so much to choose from, so we've put together a list of Hainan fruit that you absolutely have to try.

 

 1. Papaya mùguā 木瓜

    Fruits like papaya immensely benefit your body. Papayas are a natural source of vitamins and minerals that are essential for the normal functioning of the body. They are famous for their luscious taste, the sunlit color of the tropics and have many health benefits, too. Papayas can be eaten as a fruit, a smoothie, a milkshake, as well as fresh from the tree! This brightly colored, juicy fruit, not only smells heavenly and tastes great but is also very healthy. Papaya was once called the “fruit of the angels” by Christopher Columbus, and will give you better digestion, relief from toothaches, improve your immune system and promote better heart health.

This ‘king of fruits’ boasts abundant vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, and is a stomach soother as it contains enzymes with stomach comforting properties. Eating mangoes can improve your skin and boost your iron, so they are popular with women. Mangoes provide a great boost to the immune system; as well as being a great source of vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin-C and vitamin-E. These help the body resists infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen free radicals. You won't believe the size of the mangoes you can get in Hainan!

 

 3. Dragon Fruit huǒlóngguǒ火龙果

 

 

How can you resist the vibrant colors of the dragon fruit? The bright pink skin will dazzle your eyes, and the fresh cool taste of the fruit will enchant your tastebuds. Dragon fruits are high in antioxidants, which help to fight carcinogenic free-radicals from forming in the body. In addition, they are a good source of Vitamin C, and are rich in minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus. They are also low in calories and high in fiber, while the seeds are have high polyunsaturated fatty acids. Aside from its nutritional content, the fruit is also said to help excrete heavy metal toxins from the body and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Dragonfruits are also known to be a natural laxative.

 

 4. Coconut yēzi椰子

 

     

 

You can't visit Hainan, the coconut island, and not try a cold fresh coconut! This sweet treat is a great way to stay hydrated while you enjoy the tropical island scenery. Coconuts have so many uses and byproducts that it’s hard to imagine another fruit that could be this nutritious! Just a cup of fresh flesh from this fruit packs in 2.66 grams of protein, 2.6 grams of vitamin c, 285 grams of potassium, 11 grams of calcium, and 7.2 grams of fiber. The flesh has been linked to lowering bad cholesterol, raising good cholesterol, aiding in digestion, and boosting the immune system.  Coconut water is filled acts as an electrolyte balancer and is filled with fiber, proteins, sugar, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. For an extra special Hainan twist on the coconut, try Hainan coconut rice!

 

 5. Pineapple bōluó菠萝

 

 

Available year-round, pineapples have a vibrant tropical flavor that balances the tastes of sweet and tart. Fresh pineapples are sold all over Hainan, cut and ready to eat from the top of a convenient wooden skewer!Pineapples are a rich source of antioxidants. They fight against free radicals in the body, preventing cell damage. These antioxidants help protect you from diseases like atherosclerosis, heart diseases, arthritis, various cancers etc. Pineapples naturally contain few calories, cholesterol or saturated fat, but are high in fiber which makes them an ideal snack food for those that are trying to lose weight.

 

 6. Rambutan hóngmáodān红毛丹

 

A close relative of the lychee another great fruit to try in Hainan, rambutan fruit is not nearly as well known. This is due to the fact that rambutan must be eaten very soon after it is picked, and can't travel far. Luckily rambutan is grown in Hainan so you will be able to try this striking fruit just as it should be eaten – fresh from the tree! Rambutan is covered in long soft red spikes, while on the inside you will find a juicy white fruit, slightly larger and more tart than the lychee fruit, but otherwise very similar. Rambutan have been used in traditional medicine for a very long time to treat diabetes, hypertension, and many other ailments. They are full of Vitamin C, fiber, and iron, and help the body to fight infection.

 

 7. Jackfruit bōluómì菠萝蜜 

Jackfruit is the world's largest fruit, and just one jackfruit can weigh up to 80 lbs! You have to come to Hainan and see the giant fruit growing on the tree to believe it! Jackfruit is very high in Vitamin C, which will give your immune system a huge boost and keep you from being sick and miserable on your trip. Eating jackfruit is great for your skin too, giving you a healthy glow due to lots of Vitamin A. Low in calories and high in fiber, eating jackfruit will keep you slim and looking good on the beach.

 

 8. Wax Apple liánwù莲雾

 

 

Despite the name, the wax apple is not an apple, nor does it taste like wax! Ripe wax apples, also known as bell or rose apples, are sweet and crisp. The flavor is similar to a snow pear, mild and sweet. They don't last long after being picked, so be sure to eat them as soon as you get them! They are great for lowering cholesterol, preventing kidney stones, and improving your digestion.

 

 9. Starfruit yángtáo杨桃

Rich in vitamins and amino acids, carambola, or starfruit, is good for the hair and skin. It looks great when cut into distinctive yellow star shapes, and tastes tart, sweet, and juicy! High in antioxidants, Potassium, and Vitamin C, starfruit is excellent for your health as well. Low in sugar, sodium, cholesterol, and acid, eating starfruit will help you lose weight and get fit.

 

 10. Mangosteen shānzhú山竹 

 

Sometimes called “The Queen of Fruit”, mangosteen has a dark purple, hard rind, but they are white, juicy, and tangy once you open them up! Mangosteens have been found to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, and full of antioxidants. All that and a great flavor too means that mangosteens are incredibly popular, but fresh mangosteens are hard to find outside the tropics, so be sure to eat your fill when you come to Hainan!
