Transportation Information

AirlinesHaikou Meilan International Airport and Sanya Phoenix International Airport have flights to and from many destinations, both domestic and international. Bo'ao airport is also under construction and is expected to open in 2017. Light aircraft tours over Hainan Island are also available from both and Sanya.

Train: The Guangdong-Hainan railway, which opened in 2003, connects Haikou with mainland China. The trains travel by ferry across the Qiongzhou Strait.

The Eastern Ring High Speed Railway runs along Hainan's East coast between Haikou and Sanya, stopping at many coastal towns along the way, including Wenchang, Qionghai, Wanning, and more. This modern high speed train provides a comfortable, convenient, and affordable way to travel around the island.

The Western Ring High Speed Railway completes the circle around Hainan's West coast between Sanya and Haikou. There are sixteen stops: Haikou (海口), Laocheng Town (老城镇), Fushan Town (福山镇), Lingao South (临高南), Yintan (银滩), Baimajing (白马井), Haitou (海头), Qizi Bay (棋子湾), Dongfang (东方), Jinyue Bay (金月湾), Jianfeng (尖峰), Huangliu (黄流), Ledong (乐东), Yazhou (崖州), Phoenix Airport (凤凰机场) and Sanya (三亚).

Boating: Marine Transportationp lays an important role in Hainan's transportation system due to the island's highly developed sea route system. The province boasts 68 natural bays, with 24 used as harbors. Haikou and Sanya are connected to 24 countries and regions in the world by sea routes, so it is convenient for tourists to travel to Hainan from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and more.

Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal serves many international cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean International, Star Cruises and Costa Cruises, and several others.

Yachting is popular in Hainan, and many upscale marinas offer docking and service for those who travel to Hainan by yacht.

Roads: Expressways are the main means of transportation within Hainan, and at present the total length of expressways in Hainan is over 17000 kilometers. Thanks to the round-island expressways, Haikou is just a three-hour drive from Sanya on the Hainan Eastern Expressway. More and more travellers are opting to rent a car to travel around Hainan.

Taxis are a convenient way to get from one place to another, and are required by law to charge according to the meter.

Local buses operate in every part of Hainan, providing a cheap alternative mode of transportation. Most local buses cost only 1 yuan per trip, but some do charge more according to the length of the ride, so be sure to check the price and have exact change ready before boarding.
